Content-based Retrieval of 3D Medical Images

چکیده
While content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been researched for more than two decades, retrieving 3D datasets has been progressing considerably more slowly, especially in respect to its application to the medical domain. This is in part due to the limitation of processing speed when trying to retrieve highresolution datasets in real-time. Another barrier is that most existing methods have been developed based on 2D images instead of 3D, leaving a gap to be filled. At present, a significant number of exploitations are focusing on the extraction of 3D shapes. However, it appears other information tends to be equally important in clinical decision making. In this paper, Local Binary Pattern (LBP), a texture based approach stemming from 2D forms, has been studied extensively through the application to 3D images from a collection of MR brain images in a content-based image retrieval system (CBIR). The initial results show LBP not only can achieve a precision rate of up to 78% but also can perform retrieval in real time with sub-second processing speeds. Comparison with the other three popular texture-based methods, namely 3D Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrices, 3D Wavelet Transforms and 3D Gabor Transforms, is also carried out. The results demonstrate that LBP outperforms them all in terms of retrieval precision and processing speed.

Introduction: Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is a method of image searching and retrieval in a database. In medical applications, CBIR is a tool used by physicians to compare the previous and current medical images associated with patients pathological conditions. As the volume of pictorial information stored in medical image databases is in progress, efficient image indexing and retri...

Image retrieval is an important research field which has received great attention in the last decades. In this paper, we present an approach for the image retrieval based on the combination of text-based and content-based features. For text-based features, keywords and for content-based features, color and texture features have been used. Query in this system contains some keywords and an input...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Content-Based Cardiac Image Retrieval using global and local descriptors
The increase in volume of medical images generated and stored has created difficulties in accurate image retrieval. An alternative is to generate three-dimensional (3D) models from such medical images and use them in the search. Some of the main cardiac illnesses, such as Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), have deformation in the heart's shape as one of the main symptoms, which can be identified f...
متن کاملTexture-based 3d Image Retrieval for Medical Applications
Although content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been researched for more than two decades, retrieving 3D datasets has just begun recently and is mainly focusing on 3D shapes, i.e., iso-surfaces of objects. This is in part due to the fact that the major application area of CBIR is to those images available over the internet. In the medical domain however, more and more images are in three or m...
